I was going to warn you people that a product called Plastic Wood is not something you want to let dry on your fingers. In fact, the only thing that might be worse is a deadly combination of Plastic Wood, paint and caulk, all welded to your fingers in one big messy goo.

I’ve scrubbed four times now and my fingers (where I still have skin) remain a bit white and wood colored. Oh well, it’s a look…

Ask has picked up the GeoURL baton and is running with it…

If that makes no sense to you, then see the GeoURL Log, which will hopefully explain things.

It’s still a bit beta (what isn’t nowadays!?) so it may be unavailable now and then, but it’s a great resource to have restored to the internets….

I’m wondering if there is a word for this…

Have you ever analyzed an email exchange or IM log for things like hidden meanings in words or phrases? Or noticed certain words that you and another person both use? (I don’t mean common words like “the” or “and” I mean uncommon or made-up words, or even words you used in a post in the last week.) Or maybe mispellings of words which give them some sort of meaning that maybe was unintended? And what exactly does that smiley ;) mean in the context of the words around it!?

So, is this a known and existing condition? Have I reached nerdvana, or whatever the opposite of nerdvana is? I’m sure some egghead somewhere has done a study on this stuff…

Do normal people deal with things like this or just us computer geeks?

The weather data I pull from the NOAA and display for my own amusement showed me this today:

The temperature is 28° F and the current conditions are best described as “Ice Crystals”

The part that says “the current conditions are best described as” is what I wrote, but when it’s put together with “Ice Crystals” it just sounds weird. Luckily I put the current conditions inside quotes for just such an occasion…

You know, I used to think that movies were usually crazy, as in, crazy things happened that didn’t normally happen in real life, or maybe the average person’s life, but the more I live, the more I’m convinced that I was wrong, really, really wrong, like maybe it’s often the opposite, because it seems that life can be pretty weird and crazy stuff can happen on a regular basis that you wouldn’t think would happen except on TV or in the movies…

I often make references to “my movie” (with apologies to JFA) in which the movie I write will have twisted outcomes to all of the standard movie plots and situations. Actually, I suppose I should start calling it “my film” because it would obviously not be commercially viable. True art rarely is.

Still, now that I firmly believe that everyday situations are just as crazy as the stuff in movies, I start to wonder if even that will be enough…

Oh man, I shouldn’t even draw attention to this - wait - I can use nofollow! See Wisconsin Realtor at blogspot.com

So wrong… So wrong… Shame on you Julia!

If only some of Google’s/Blogger’s bestest and brightest could put some of that brainpower towards stopping such abuse of the system…

Kottke says:

In the rough chart I conjured in my head last night, the revenue line and the “I don’t need to sell my blood plasma” line are converging nicely…

Pete says: Oh how I wish there were a place near my home that would pay me for my plasma, or other bodily fluids I can quicky replenish/have too much of - and remember kids, besides providing some extra income, plasma can actually save lives - start selling your plasma today!

Want to learn more about plasma from RasterWeb!?

Thanks T-Mobile! If you did not have such crappy coverage where I live I might have actually considered using you as a service provider, and getting a Sidekick.

And while we’re on the subject of security, obscurity, and other issues… I must remind people that misinformation can be as useful as information. Poor Paris got her data 0wn3d, and that ain’t cool, but I saw several people wonder if it was real or not… See, now I don’t have the contacts she does, but what I would do is salt (or pepper) my data with some stuff that just makes no sense, like “Ask Colonel Sanders for that recipe” or maybe “Tell Elvis he left the water running again” and my contacts would include Squiddly Diddly and Dr. Zachary Smith. You know, just enough weirdness to confuse people and make them question the legitimacy of it all.

Worth a read for more background on the whole podcasting thing: Harold Gilchrist’s My contribution to Audioblogging/Podcasting

Chances are you hear a few names tossed about with the words “invented” and “podcasting” near them, but I’d recommend a bit of history, and Harold can provide some… Each person knows what they brought to the story, but often everyone else only knows what they’re told by the media.

XAMPP provides an (easy) install of Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl. You can get it from the Apache Friends, which sounds like some league of superheros, and to those trying to install all of the above mentioned components, they just might be.

The Mac OS X version is still in beta, but if the word “beta” bothers you, well, then I don’t know what to tell you, since beta nowadays just seems to mean “we reserve the right to have bugs, so don’t complain about it” or something like that…

What? Are you crazy? Useful Spam?

Yes, I’ve found a use for spam. See, I’ve got this mail server that now and then has some reliability issues, and while I’m on some mailing lists, and some of them are even semi-high volume, when you want to see if your mail server is really working, just check the spam folder. Chances are, you (if you’re like me) should see at least a few (dozen) spam every hour. So, I just need to check my spam folder and make sure I have a steady stream of spam, and I then know the mail server is doing it’s job and keeping the mail flowing.

See? You can put a positive spin on anything…

Aw, man, poor ev! He went and sold that Blogger thing to Google and tried to show them what blogging was all about but they just didn’t get it.

He’s probably so distraught about the whole thing he can barely count the huge bags of money he got from the deal…

Whew, I can thank my lucky stars I don’t have to contend with such conflict in life…

Hey, who doesn’t like cake? I know I do! Kim, who I knew back in school when I was a younger lad, alerted me to the fact that Debbie, another schoolyard aquaintence, runs a place called “Eat Cake!” and you can see www.eatcakemilwaukee.com for more on that, or see this OnMilwaukee.com article on Debbie for even more…

So, you know, if you’re near Milwaukee, and need a cake, go see Debbie…

Oh, if you’re not into cake, but just want to see what Scott Smith, or Pyscho Johnny have to say, that’s fine too…

(Tell ‘em Petey sent ya!)

In Google Maps I had mentioned that I spent a few minutes hacking on the WordPress Geo Plugin to add support for Google Maps, and, I know, I really should have cleaned up the code and sent it to the author, but he came looking for me, so I ended up sending him my additions for Google Maps which he added in.

I’m so proud.

I mean, I’m not “so proud” of the code, as it was a trivial addition. I’m proud to be contributing to an open-source project that I really like. (WordPress and associated pieces.) I’ve been slacking off on some of the projects I used to contribute quite heavily to, so it’s nice to be able to get something out there people might find useful.

It’s the little things, right? ;)
