Feed HEADs

This data comes from the Share Your OPML! site. It uses this OPML file, that contains the Top 100 Feeds.

I was interested in two things, first comparing the web servers used to serve feeds (see hotList HEADs for background) and checking the mime-types of the feeds listed.

So here we present a per-site analysis, as well as some totals...

Note that this is not a web application. It is not updated nightly. I ran the data through a perl script to get the results.

(YMMV, and I'm sure this data will change over time. For the record the data was collected on 01.21.2004)

More interesting is the mime-types. We see text/xml as the most popular. I'm guessing this is the default config for Apache or something. I had thought application/rss+xml was the correct mime-type for RSS. Shouldn't it be on top? I thought we all agreed when we worked out the <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" ...> tag that application/rss+xml was the right way... Perhaps I missed a few meetings on the subject...
