BarCampMilwaukee5 Tweets

Below I will attempt to highlight, explain, refute, or otherwise mention some of the tweets that were posted as a result of BarCampMilwaukee5…

ontask
ontask #bcmke5 is so cool! Ask for help unloading truck and 25 people come to help! Thanks folks.

I got a message from Lena saying she had arrived and needed help unloading. I yelled something to that effect, and I think Gabe re-yelled it, and a huge number of people unloaded the truck in less than 5 minutes. It was cool to see that happen. Also, we used all the crates she brought in the Creative Commons Photo Studio we built.

Gabe certainly is poetic. And loud.

Yeah, sadly “crooks and liars” is equivalent to SEO in many people’s minds.

raster Can someone drive a guy to Bayshore Apple Store? #bcmke5

So Travis needed a power supply for a MacBook Air, and asked me where he could get one. We told him where the Apple Store was, but I also asked this question. I got a reply from Alex Falkenberg, and after a quick phone call, Alex said he would pick one up on the way to Bucketworks. Travis paid Alex, got his power supply, and didn’t need to leave BarCamp. Thanks Alex!

Gabe, JYoda, and I all had Zoom H2 Handy recorders. I left mine in one room, Gabe left his in another, and JYoda carried his around with him. We didn’t get every session, but we got some. Sadly, I didn’t get any video like I did for BarCampMadison… The nice thing about the Zoom H2 is that an 8GB card can record for 40 hours easily, capturing the entire event…. well, one room of it. Next time bring your recording devices! (It’s also good to see some people publish their media really quickly… unlike me.)

Actually the guy from Dubai traveled from Chicago, and he didn’t even know he was going to BarCamp! I asked about the possibility of a Bucketworks-like thing in Dubai, but he was not optimistic it was even possible there… That made me thankful that we have a place like Bucketworks in Milwaukee.

Well I sure enjoyed the Lightning Talks. I wish more people would have participated. I mean, I did like 3 or 4 of them, and could have done more, if even just to inspire others. Maybe the BarCampMadison talks were better because they applied alcohol before the talks started.

For a while during the Late Night Maddness we started a Twitter campaign to get people to come to Bucketworks and join us. I don’t think it worked. I think we just scared and alienated everyone. So, business as usual I guess.

Thanks again to the Larkee’s for making breakfast, cleaning up, and never once complaining about any of it… When I saw there was no syrup, I thought to myself “I have no one to blame but myself!” because really, if I wanted syrup, I should have brought some, or gone to the store to get some, or some other third thing. Also, I hadn’t slept much, so who knows what I was thinking…

TO DO

Snack Bar

Things on my TO DO list I still haven’t done, but want to… Some of these were on my list for BarCampMilwaukee5‘s Late Night Hacking, but I ended up laughing way too much.

Don’t worry, I’ll get these things done… eventually… maybe…

BarCampMilwaukee5 T-Shirt Design

Submitted for your approval… My design concept for the BarCampMilwaukee5 t-shirt. The title is “EXPLORE!” and it’s got an astronaut driving a land rover on the Earth’s Moon.

This is just my design, and technically, you still have until Monday, September 13, 2010 to submit one. After that, It’s all up to whil. (And his team of t-shirt art-choosers.)

BarCamp Planning

I am writing this post because I promised I would, and dammit, I keep my word!

But seriously, go read what Crystal has to say in her post: Ten Steps to Organizing a BarCamp. Below are just my own notes from helping to organize BarCampMilwaukee2. (Please note I said helping to organizing. It’s definitely a team effort, and none of us could have done it alone, so build a good team!)

We found a mailing list essential. This was the way ideas got out there and discussed. We wanted to keep things in the open, so almost all conversation through email was public, and anyone could join the list. If someone had something to offer, we wanted them to be able to without feeling like they had to join some secret club.

We met in person a number of times. Typically we’d do in-person discussions and try to make decisions. Again, these meeting were public and announced on the mailing list. Afterwards, we posted the results to the mailing list and web site for people to comment on. Through this process we hoped no one was feeling left out due to missing meetings. We felt that if you made the effort to make your voice be heard, someone would listen.

We had a great core group for BarCampMilwaukee2, so tasks got broken up pretty well. Shirt art and ordering, table-renting, projector-finding, mailing list managing, web site building, food/beverage shopping, meal planning, sponsor-wrangling, money co-ordinating… Luckily no single person got stuck doing all of those things. In some cases people did more than one task, but they usually had help, or backup as well.

Community building is a big part of BarCamp, and we definitely did that this time around, through the process of planning, as well as the event itself. Personally, this is one of the main reasons I am involved with BarCamp, to build community, meet new people, make connections – even if they are not directly involving me – I find it amazing that Person X and Person Y, whom I both knew prior to BarCamp, now seem to be great friends and hang out together, that’s the coolest part. Robots and promoting technology are cool, but for me it’s all about community.

A big thanks goes out to our sponsors and participants, we’ll see you again in the Fall of 2008.

Mini RC Helicopters

At the first BarCampMilwaukee, in 2006, someone showed up with a mini RC helicopter (I think it was Jerry?) and everyone thought it was cool. $30 at Radio Shack? Many geeks said they’d be picking one up ASAP.

Mini RC Helicopters

So I was thinking, since Bucketworks has some major ceiling height in the warehouse section, let’s bring some mini RC helicopters and fly them around. Now, I don’t have one yet, but I’ll get one. Amazon lists a bunch, but I want to read through the reviews and try to pick a good one. You wanna fly with us? Pick up a mini RC helicopter and bring it to BarCampMilwaukee2 on Oct 13/14, 2007.
