We’re working on making more of this site XHTML/CSS compliant, which seems like a never-ending task. I’m sure it only seems that way though. We’re also working on making things look similar between browsers and platforms, and walking the line between full compliance to the standards, and what we like to call living in the real world. Interesting times indeed…

From Daring Fireball, That Finder Thing:

In the OS X Finder, double-clicking on a folder produces completely different results depending on the visibility state of the current window’s toolbar. This is madness.

I miss the old Finder. As is the Mac-way, under pre-Mac OS X, the Finder just worked! And it worked fast, and it worked as you would expect it to work. And you could use labels, and… That’s probably one reason I spend so much time in the terminal, because the Mac OS X Finder is problematic. It’s gotten better, but I was hoping Jaguar would see massive Finder improvements instead of minor ones… I did use NeXTSTEP a bit, and I’ve got nothing against it, but right now I’m using Mac OS X, and I want to be using Mac OS X, not NeXTSTEP. Apple, fix it dammit!

Oh no! Used Mac parts reseller Shreve Systems closes. I always looked forward to seeing their poorly designed bargain basement ads in the Mac magazines… I mean, who knows when you might need to replace the power supply in your original Apple ][+ or get a logic board for a Mac Classic?

I’ve been looking at Drupal and it looks like it might work for some projects I have planned. Drupal is available under the GPL, which was one of the requirements I had. So far it’s close enough to what I need that I’m actually willing to dig in and see what it can and can’t do. Honestly Movable Type would be my first choice, but I have issues with their licensing.

jEdit 4.1pre6 now available: Yay… I’ve been using a development version of 4.1pre6 for a while, glad to see things are moving along. As usual, if you need a good text editor, and haven’t yet tried jEdit, give it a try.

I spent most of the weekend re-tiling our bathroom. (Luckily I had the help of someone who knew what they were doing.) I did not find tiling to be much fun. Every now and then people in the tech industry talk about how they think about chucking it all and going into some line of work that’s not computer related, like baking bread, or selling widgets, or what have you. Well, I’m glad I work in the tech industry, because I actually like it, and I think I’m good at it. Sure, sometimes I too think of getting out, but if I ever do, being a tile installation person will not be on my list of professions to try out…

Breathing in tile adhesive and grout powder is almost as bad as debugging Active Server Pages. I said almost.

Give Your Users the Power of the Press With Weblogs and Wikis: I’ve found wikis to be an excellent solution to keeping notes on server configs and the like. Especially if you’ve got more than one admin doing things on a box… or a bad memory ;)

We had another vendor demo recently, and when things seemed to run slow, the vendor said Well, this is a demo server, things normally runs much faster. so, here’s my question. If your company sells software, and part of selling the software is showing a working demo, do you make sure you have a decent demo box to run things on, or do you just find some old cast off Pentium II to use as a demo server?

There’s an Apple iPhoto Promo going on. If you haven’t gotten a book using iPhoto yet, I highly recommend it.

We got a used refrigerator recently, and while it was suggested that transporting it upright was the way to go, we transported it on it’s side. After the initial startup, and a day of running, it was determined that it was not cold enough. We worried. We wondered. Had we done something wrong? Is it ok to transport a refrigerator on it’s side? Never fear, I consulted Google, and found out that it is ok, as long as you allow the oil to drain back down to the motor, we waited long enough, two days in fact. I ended up cleaning the coils and everything else, and raising it up a bit off the floor. Soon all was well, it was cold as it should be. Oh, the most interesting thing Google had to tell me was the story of moving a refrigerator with a bike! Bikes at Work has lots of other neat bike realted stuff too… Thanks Google! (We used a van, btw…)

Says Dave Winer:

REST was a retrofit by people who don’t like personal computers to try to stop progress in building GUI software that ran over the Internet.

I must admit that I am no expert on REST or SOAP, but I really doubt the people who created SOAP said to themselves: Hmmm, we need a protocol that will stop the progress of building GUI software that runs over the internet. Oh, and we don’t like personal computers! It almost sounds like FUD on Dave’s part…

For info on REST, you can see Paul’s REST Resources. I took a quick look, and didn’t find any mention of stopping the progress of building GUI software that runs over the internet, or not liking personal computers…

Did you know the W3C has a Link Checker written in perl, and you can download it?
