And it’s like “beep, beep, beep…”

This is what Safari had to say:

H0S3D

I managed to hose perl pretty well on one of my machines. I got sick of trying to fix things, and ended up re-installing Jaguar. But I had to do the Archive and Install thingy, since you can’t re-install 10.2 over 10.2.3 it seems.

So I’m a bit behind in everything now, but it looks like I’ve got MySQL, PHP, ImageMagick, and (almost) all of the crucial stuff back in place.

That’ll teach me to pay more attention to what CPAN is asking me, but honestly, should it have tried to install perl 5.8 while I wasn’t looking? Argh…

Internet, full speed ahead!

We did it. After three completely unrelated people talked to me about their high-speed internet access via cable modem, we ordered it up. I had been contemplating DSL for a while, but couldn’t get the service I wanted, for the price I wanted, in our area. So we’re going with cable. If we’re lucky it’ll be installed by this weekend. If we’re unlucky it’ll be another week.

The pricing was quite good. We’re actually getting digital cable with the connection. So basically:

cable + dialup + $5 == digital cable + cable modem

So we’ll be paying about 5 bucks a month more for upgrading from dialup to cable, and getting digital cable with an extra hundred channels as well.

Happy Happy Joy Joy!

Or something like that…

Back to School/Work

So Dave’s getting a job. I’m surprised someone hasn’t started a pool on how long he’ll last. I don’t mean that to sound negative. Dave tends to move on in his focus. The last time I recommended a UserLand solution, one of the warnings I put into it was that UserLand seems to change the focus of their tools fairly often. Still, it seems weblogging is the one interest that’s lasted beyond all else.

The positive spin is that Dave tends to look at a lot of things. Though I sometimes think he tends to look only as far as his tools will take him. Nonetheless, I admire his statement upon accepting a new job:

My goal is to do as little work as possible.

That’s what I tell every employer who has ever hired me. I mean, that’s what I’d like to tell them, but I think that instead of a job they’d offer me a quick trip to the curb…

Open Source for Windows

Are there still people in your life who use Windows? Have you introduced them to open source?

There’s TheOpenCD project:

The OpenCD is a collection of high-quality Open Source Software. All of the programs on the disc run under Windows; the disc is intended to be an Open Source showcase.

They’re providing CD images you can download and burn.

There’s also the GNUWin project:

GNUWin II is a free software compilation for Windows… GNUWin II includes numerous programs, completely free, which cover a wide spectrum of uses.

Again, you can download and burn, or you can order a CD from them.
