NBC and YouTube

When we last mentioned NBC and YouTube, it was all about how YouTube had gotten a take-down notice from NBC, and how they were riding copyright infringement to success.

We the people of independent media were pleased. Some brash young company came on the scene, did video the wrong way, disregarded rights of the creators, and got slapped for it. Of course a slap usually doesn’t hurt very much, does it?

Today when I search for "nbc youtube" the first result is Boing Boing: NBC nastygrams YouTube over "Lazy Sunday" and the second is NBC strikes deal with YouTube | CNET News.com. That’s how fast things change. In about six months NBC goes from almost suing YouTube to partnering with them. Obviously we have a new business plan to investigate…

But is it really new? It looks like the Napster thing, do something naughty, maybe even illegal, and when you get called on it, attempt to go legit. You’ve probably gained a ton of users, and name recognition, and as long as you’ve got the VC money and lawyers, you’re set.

Obviously I’m doing it all wrong. The rewards don’t go to honest companies/people, they go to the ones that play dirty and break laws. So who wants to start a new venture with me?

Ourmedia fubar’d?

I’m a big supporter of Ourmedia, but the past few videos I’ve tried to upload there have failed. I’ve even tried multiple times to do uploads, and I either just get a blank page after upload or an error message.

Ourmedia upload error

I’m not doing anything different in how I create videos, and my browser setup should not have changed, so I don’t know what is up. I’m sure I’ll try again, especially with audio, but for now I’m putting my video on blip.tv.

Most of the videobloggers have plenty of good things to say about blip.tv. They’re a company that gets it when it comes to videoblogging, and Mike Hudack from blip.tv takes part in the conversation with videobloggers which, I think, goes a long way towards earning their praise.

Keep up the good work blip.tv!

GETV and Scoble (and PodTech!)

d00d, Geek Entertainment TV Sells Out To PodTech… and that’s a good thing!

I’ve been a supporter of GETV for a while now (see: the aptly titled post Geek Entertaintment TV for proof) and that Scoble guy? I’ve seen him around the blogosphere a bit…

I know Scoble went to some (previously) little known outfit called PodTech, and I guess the blogosphere even noticed it, and sure, while everyone was all “Rocketboom this” and “Rocketboom that” I was all “GETV d00d!” or something like that.

Anyway, congrats to all parties involved… I can’t wait until I get to sell-out for real. I mean, PayMeToBlog.com is selling-out, but so far it’s just little selling-out, not full-blown selling-out, which is what I’m after.

PayMeToBlog.com

I’m sick of hearing about honesty and integrity in the blogosphere. Sick of it! And so are you… Well, fret no more, the problem is solved!

Introducing PayMeToBlog.com, a site where you pay me to blog.

That’s right, no worries about some hidden agenda or disclosure. If a post shows up there, it’s been paid for (unless otherwise noted.)

I like to think of it as a bold experiment in blogging and advertising. I’m either a sell-out or a genius, you decide.

(Oh yeah, it’s also a videoblog. We’re multimedia-capable you know!)

BarCampMilwaukee?

I’m a big fan of the BarCamp events. There is one in Chicago soon which I can’t attend. I’m wondering if it would be possible to organize one in the Milwaukee area?

Participants

We would need participants. There’s the Milwaukee Web Design Meetup, Milwaukee Ruby User’s Group, The Milwaukee Linux User Group, The Wisconsin Java User Group, and hopefully a few more groups that might have people interested in participating… I think finding people interested in participating would be the easy part.

Location

I’m ranking “finding a suitable location” as difficult. I’ve got a few ideas so far, and I’m sure I could come up with more, but I’m very open to suggestions here. (One issue which might be a problem is “event insurance” so keep that on the list with a big star next to it.)

Sponsors

Companies or individuals that might help sponsor the event may prove harder. This isn’t San Francisco, it’s Milwaukee, and the money usually doesn’t flow as freely here. I suppose it all depends on the cost of the event as to how much sponsorship we might be able to pull together. Since things are generally cheaper in the midwest, I’d hope we could do it for maybe half the cost of BarCampLA.

Equipment

Powerstrips, networking gear, computers, misc. “stuff” would be needed. This is probably my least worried about issue, because in past events I’ve been involved with, these things always seem to work themselves out. Of course I might just be overly-optomistic here.

Planning

Luckily, there are already some good guides to help out with the planning: BarcampLA Post-Mortem, BarCamp NYC – the Nuts and Bolts, Dummies Guide to organizing a BarCamp in your city, as well as the BarCamp site’s Organize a Local Bar Camp section…

So what do you think? Could we pull off a BarCampMilwaukee?
