PHP has many functions. This is one of the main problems with PHP.

Any function that would be silly to implement has not been and has been marked as such in this documentation. They will still be exportable, but if you attempt to use said function you will get an error telling you to read these docs.

I had a brief discussion with an IT guy about Firebird, and what it might take to get his organization using it instead of IE. (The subject came up when he was giving advice about preventing popup ads and spyware installations.) It turns out he actually uses Firebird at home, but since it was still not quite done, and in beta, as it were, if they deployed Firebird, they would have to do it again when it became an official release. I mentioned that deployment of Firebird to a large number of machines should be pretty easily automated, to which he agreed. His next point was that Firebird was a nice browser, but besides tabbed browsing and blocking popups, what real improvements did it offer the users? Hmmm, what indeed… He also mentioned that changing a piece of software that a user uses can cause familiarity problems. This is true, but for most casual browser users, are the differences that dramatic? Knowing that he’s a big fan of Microsoft, I didn’t push the issue, but I am interested in what it will take for Firebird to get into large, often slow-moving organizations, taking the place of IE.

An interesting thread on the jedit-users list about menu behavior. I read this message and then though to myself that the user must not be using a Mac. Lo and behold the reply to it was "Well you could get a Mac (HHOS)." Now for more info you should read this question to Tog, and Question 6 of Tog’s "A Quiz Designed to Give You Fitts".

The behavior of hierarchichal menus in the Mac OS is just another one of those ‘details’ I sometimes mention that make all the difference between it and other operating systems. This is why someone who has used a Mac for a long time has such a problem getting comfortable using Windows, but for someone who has used Windows and switches to a Mac, it’s something that might easily go by unnoticed. And honestly, that’s sort of how it should be, because as I said, it’s those subtle little things, the details, that make all the difference…

(Oh, and just in case you didn’t know HHOS is an acronym for "ha ha only serious")

A friend of mine wants to go wireless with his PowerBook, it’s an older TiBook, 400 mhz I believe, and he’ll probably get a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (Model WRT54G). That’s all well and good, but I’m unsure as to what to suggest for the PowerBook? Can it take an Airport card? (This model doesn’t have an internal slot does it?) Should he go with a wireless card for the PC slot? What brand/model? I’ve no clue, as the PowerBook I use is roughly 5 1/2 years old and there are no wireless networks near my house…

So we’ve got an older TiBook and we need 802.11g support… What to do? If you could let me know, I’d appreciate it. Thanks…

(Note: He is running Mac OS 9 right now, but will be upgrading to Jaguar very soon, so OS X only solutions are fine…)
