Wiki Geek

The newest pages on my personal wiki are entitled “Meal Plan” and “Grocery List” which I’m pretty sure propels me into some sort of weird Wiki Geek status where almost everything is put into a wiki.

I used to keep the shopping list on the Palm, but, I mean, it’s just not accessible from any browser anywhere on the planet! What would I do when confronted with a strange computer, nothing but a net connection, and the realization that I really need to purchase olive oil?

MD5 on strings

I’ve written before about an idea I had for an md5sum differ and I even implemented it and called it the md5checker.

Well, I can’t just leave old MD5 alone can I?

Our most recent use works like this: A script that processes hundreds of files in a loop first does an md5hash on the whole file as a string, and saves the result, and then it does all of it’s processing (which involves a whole lot of regular expression magic) and then at the end, before it writes the string to disk as a file, once again does an md5hash on it again, and if it hasn’t change, it doesn’t bother writing out a new file.

After processing it’s simple to see how effective the script is after each run, and how many files are affected. Amazing, huh?

(This post is brought to you by the letters M and D and the number 5.)

Yahoo! is Listening

Those guys are Yahoo! are cool. Not only are the creating interesting web services, they’re asking for suggestions and implementing them! (Are you listening Google?)

We asked for a way to use latitude and longitude with Local Search, and now we can. (Time to see what else I can do with Yahoo’s new toys… )

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about the fun to be had with Google’s maps, but it might be time to hack at that Geo Plugin again…

LOTR as a Comedy?

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is pretty funny. I mean, it’s a serious story and everything, but this weekend while I was working on a project which required visual attention, I played the LOTR: TTT DVD with the audio commentary by the cast, and while Elijah and Sean tend to make these deep introspective comments, Dom and Billy tend to make humorous remarks about things, all sort of true to their characters I guess…

Identity Sale

Oh sure, you hear a whole lot about Identity Theft, but what about Identity Sale?

When asked recently by Czeltic Girl about Metafilter, I confessed that it’s been quite a while since I’ve been a regular visitor, so when I checked I learned that I am Metafilter user 577 (since March 8, 2000 anyway!)

I also remembered someone asking me about Slashdot a few years ago, and there too I mentioned how I used to visit Slashdot pretty often many years back, and my Slashdot user number is 871.

Most of the people I know have numbers that are a zillion times higher than those, which got me thinking… Maybe I should auction off my identity/user numbers? I mean, just think of the credibility you’d get if you could say “Yeah, I’ve been using Metafilter since 2000, I’m user number 577” or “Slashdot? Yeah, I practically helped start it! I’m user number 871…”

I’m tellin’ ya, fame, fortune, beatiful cars, fast women, prosthetic forearms, they could all be yours… Just make me an offer…
