Mixed Blood

I donated blood today, which is something I’d really like to do more often, but it’d hard to find the time in the 50+ hour work week to do so… Well, it’s the Holiday Season, so this is my donation to a worthy cause I guess.

Here’s my vitals for today:

  • Blood Pressure: 118/78
  • Temperature: 98.4
  • Pulse: 78

If you want to do something nice this year, go donate some blood.

The Linux Guy’s Perl Packet

You must read The Blue Packet. Ok you don’t have to read it, I’ve pulled out the one nugget in the whole thing I found most amusing/relevant/true:

Some Linux guy in either Engineering or IT sets up a server that generates perfect blue packets with 3 lines of Perl code, but nobody notices him.

Ok, there is one more bit at the end…

The Linux guy eventually leaves the company to start his own Internet venture and ends up buying Google five years later.

(Still waiting for the second part…)

Beep! Beep! Beep! Backing Up!

People, really… A public service announcement.

Make some backups!

My own backup strategy consists largely of something like this:

ditto -V -rsrcFork /Users/pete /Volumes/Backup/Users/pete

Which, besides making a whole bunch of text appear on the screen, backs up your home directory, saving the resource fork, just in case!

That /Volumes/Backup is actually a drive on another machine, so now we’ve got a copy. Well, a few hours later we have a copy…

(See Also: man ditto)

Marc C. and Marqui

Marc Canter has this idea, that bloggers (those who write on the web) should/could get paid just for writing about certain companies. I’m all for it. Heck, I’ll mention stuff for money, bring it on! (Waiting…)

There is a demo at the Marqui site starring some Jetson-lookalikes that explain what Marqui is about. In watching it, I couldn’t help but feel that Marqui is attempting to bridge what is commonly called “old media” with “new media” or maybe “big co” with “backchannel” or… no wait, I know… “lumbering media” with “agile media” – yeah that’s it!

Well, it’s an interesting experiment. I think it could work. I’ll continue to monitor the situation on my Apple PowerMac computer at the end of each day after I kick off my Converse All Stars and relax with a nice cool Sprecher’s Root Beer.

(Disclaimer: I don’t know what I’m talking about!)

Personal Wiki

About two months ago I started a wiki. No, not here, on red, the Linux box in my basement. The goal was to try to replace the ~/Notes dir on my Mac with something I could easily get to (I always have a browser running) and something that would allow for easy linking and searching. I know a directory full of text files is the unix way, but I wanted something different.

I’ve been using wiki’s for a long time, but never really set up a “Personal Wiki” just for me before.

So far it’s been a huge success with all of it’s users (me) in that I’ve added over 50 pages in two months. sure there was an initial surge in page creation, but it seems that I add new pages at least every few days, and make edits almost daily. It’s a lot of personal stuff, which people would find even less interesting that what I am writing now. (If you can believe that.)

Now as for the directory full of text files, I think wget -r mixed in with some perl and cron on my desktop machine might actually solve that issue…
