I gave a presentation at Web414 last night about MilwaukeeDevHouse.
Because I am FAIL! at using office suites, I did the presentation in S5, and it’s called MilwaukeeDevHouse, FTW?
MilwaukeeDevHouse1 will be taking place Friday, March 14th, 2008 at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Get there around 7PM, stay until you fall over.

Sure, we hope to combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere, but what do you plan do when you are there?
SuperHappyDevHouse23 just took place, and here’s a few things people had on their TO DO list for it:
I’ve already had one person say “I’ll bring nasty toxic chemicals to etch PC boards and make something” so already, we’re looking at something interesting happening. :)
Following in the footsteps of those before us, mainly SuperHappyDevHouse, we are starting something new in Milwaukee, and it’s called (aptly enough) MilwaukeeDevHouse.
And there will be numbers. And they will be sequential. And MilwaukeeDevHouse1 will happen Friday, March 14th, 2008 at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We’ll start around 7PM and go until we pass out, we get kicked out, or we’re out of ideas.
MilwaukeeDevHouse aims to be the premier regularly scheduled hackathon event that combines serious and not-so-serious productivity with a fun and exciting party atmosphere.
If you’re a coder, designer, or just someone who enjoys software and technology development, MilwaukeeDevHouse was made for you…
MilwaukeeDevHouse is intended for passionate and creative technical people that want to have some fun, learn new things, and meet new people.
There is a web site at milwaukeedevhouse.org with very little useful information, so visit the Web414 kids at node 170 and give them some love. Or check it at Upcoming or the Facebooks or even the Bucketworks new site (much of which runs Drupal, in fact, you should register while you are there.)

DrupalCampWisconsin was held all day on Saturday, January 19th, 2008 at MSOE in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’d like to thank everyone who showed up and took part, and all of the sponsors for the care and feeding during the 12+ hour event. Thanks to Web414 for organizing the thing, Fresh Coast Ventures and 2XL Networks for providing beverages, and Cruiskeen Consulting LLC, EC Connection, and Palantir for keeping our bellies full so we could concentrate on Drupal.
This was the first real BarCamp-type event we’ve done which was not really a BarCamp. Since it was a smaller event, and just one day, and focused on one thing (Drupal!) it was a bit different. We had planned to settle in between 9AM and 10AM, and then kick right into it, but due to a few issues, we really got started closer to 11AM, and Larry from Palantir started with a good overview of the Drupal Ecosystem, and what makes Drupal what it is, not just code, but a community of good people doing good things. My note during this time was that you can’t just look at the code of an open source project you plan to invest in, you need to look at the people that make up the community. No matter how good a piece of software is, I don’t want to have to deal with jerks every time I use it. Drupal has a serious lack of jerks… What they don’t have is a lack of female involvement. Larry mentioned that the percentage of women involved in open source is typically low, and is lower than the percentage involved in just software development in general, but in the Drupal community, the number is pretty high. (KarenS was there, and I can tell you, she really knew her stuff! We had a handful of “Drupal Ninjas” and she was definitely near the top of that list.)
Like I said, slow start… After we asked the group for session ideas, we wrote them down and built a rough schedule. We then just talked generally about the Drupal Community until noon when lunch arrived, and then ate our subs and launched into the sessions. We ended up having two rooms, one for Beginner sessions, and one for Advanced sessions. We covered a lot of stuff including CCK, Views, Ubercart, and more… until it was time for dinner. Oh, we also put up a “who needs work/who needs to hire someone” board. After dinner we ended up combining the Beginner and Advanced groups into one and covered theming.
After the event ended, we headed over to Bucketworks for a party sponsored by Social Helix and The Fireseed Group. There was drink and merriment until we were too tired and went home to sleep.
Will we do it again? Definitely…
We stopped by the new venue for BarCampMilwaukee2 on Saturday… if you missed the news, we had to change venues, as Bucketworks will not be ready in time to host the event. Bucketworks is still involved, and are the ones who managed to get this new space for us. Anyway, we took a look at the place, and did a bit of cleanup and planning. The new space provides some challenges, but nothing we can’t overcome. First, some photos…
This is what you will be looking for when you arrive at BarCampMilwaukee2. That’s the door you go in. You may need to give your name to a security guard, so make sure we have your real name.
Inside the place, it’s pretty much wide open. We’ll do our best at breaking up the space, there are not really separate rooms, it’s just one big room. (It was a cube farm.) There are outlets as needed, but bring a power strip. There should be wifi access points, BUT! (and here’s the BIG BUT) We have no connection to the internet! Yup, that’s right… as of right now, there is no connection to the outside world, which, sort of sucks. This is the biggest problem we have to fix. And we’ve got under 30 days to do it. If you can help with this, let us know. It’s top of the list right now.

Some good news: We will have plenty of parking, there are bathrooms and vending machines right outside the big room, the floors are carpeted and nice to sit on. It’s clean, there are nice windows to look out of, and… it’ll work. We really could use an internet connection though…
