Yup, yeah, that’s right… It’s time for another DevHouse.

MilwaukeeDevHouse4 that is!

Back in 2008 we managed to throw 3 DevHouses, but we slacked in 2009, and this is the first of the year, but 4th in total. Math is hard.

So what is this MilwaukeeDevHouse thing? Well, I made a presentation before the first one, and it’s here, but if you hate pictures…

MilwaukeeDevHouse is relaxed, party-like atmosphere to hang out with friends (or make new ones!) and get things done… You know, that blog you’ve always been meaning to redesign, those photos you’ve been meaning to retouch, that Firefox extension or Drupal module that’s been sitting undone for 6 months. It’s like an all-night co-working session. At a house. Where a party is going on. Yup. Think of it like the late-night part of BarCamp where there aren’t sessions, but anything goes and people stare at computers all night long, hacking on who knows what.

Atomic Records

Atomic Records

Atomic Records, a mainstay of Milwaukee music, is closing…. and it makes us sad. Not just us, but pretty much anyone who loves music, and has been a customer some time in the past 24 years. For many of us, who first went there in the early years, it was the way we got music. (There was Ear Waves, Atomic Records, and Rush-Mor… and soon just Rush-Mor will be left.)

I started going to UWM in 1987, and it seemed like a weekly occurrence to walk down to Atomic and see what was going on… what fliers were up, what zines where out, what records we could find. Yeah, records… on vinyl… or tapes, lots of tapes from local bands, or 7″s from punk bands from wherever… you get the idea.

So it’s with great sadness we say goodbye to Atomic. (I tried to save them, really I did…) I’m sure if I go through my collection of vinyl, tapes, and even CD’s I would find a good amount that I got from Atomic Records. It’s weird, but I even remember specific events, like seeing about John Makay (teenage runaway from high-school) right across the street when everyone we knew thought he was in California or something… or the time Scott Schoenbeck saw me there, but didn’t know it was me cuz I was wearing blue jeans or something weird like that… Just crazy stuff that doesn’t mean much, except to me.

Atomic, we will miss you… you played an important part of my life, and the lives of many in Milwaukee (and surrounding areas where there were no record stores) when we needed it… Thanks!

The 48 Hour Film Project

If you’re available for a whole weekend of production, and you love filmmaking, you might want to get involved with the The 48 Hour Film Project.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.

It’s a neat idea, and a cool project that forces a burst of creativity in a short amount of time. While it is happening in Milwaukee the weekend of June 20th, 2008, I sadly, cannot take part… at least not for the entire weekend.

MilwaukeeDevHouse1 Wrap-up

We held a little event called “MilwaukeeDevHouse1” on March 14, 2008 at Bucketworks, where people came together to “party with laptops” as it were. The event was modeled after SuperHappyDevHouse which originated in the Bay Area.

So what happened at our little DevHouse? People hung out and worked on… well, whatever they wanted to. At one point Jon Thoms, Master of Flash, asked me what we were going to work on, and we somehow managed to hook him up with two guys with a startup that needed some Flash component. Matt Pickard taught Jeramey about clipping paths. Tracy did some crazy photo manipulation project. Nikol did… I’m not sure, but she was there… 4braham planned out some crazy Twitter mashup idea. Mike and his son Nathan scanned in drawings and made a book. KeVroN discussed when not to use Drupal, and I strung a guitar.

Things were in full swing from about 7PM on, with about 30+ people at the high point. We had food and drinks (mostly provided by Web414 folks) and ended up ordering pizza and wings later in the night. There were many photos taken, and I even made a video.

(Jeramey is already planning MilwaukeeDevHouse2, so I guess we’ll call MilwaukeeDevHouse1 a success.)

MilwaukeeDevHouse, FTW? Presentation

I gave a presentation at Web414 last night about MilwaukeeDevHouse.

Because I am FAIL! at using office suites, I did the presentation in S5, and it’s called MilwaukeeDevHouse, FTW?

MilwaukeeDevHouse1 will be taking place Friday, March 14th, 2008 at Bucketworks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Get there around 7PM, stay until you fall over.
