If you look at the Java world, more and more people involved in Java development are looking at, and moving to, Ruby.
For web development, I’d pick Ruby over Java any day. (Of course I’m still a Perl & PHP fan myself.) For desktop applications, Java is nice when you want a cross-platform solution.
