The RasterCon Idea

You can blame Philip Crawford for this idea… After MadCamp he said something to the effect of “You should hold a PeteCamp… I’d be there!” So while the name isn’t set in stone yet (PeteCamp? RasterCon?) I sort of like the idea, and here it is:

An entire day of Pete.

Hmmm, how can I describe this without sounding like an egomaniac… It’s not so much about me, but about how I like to share with others.

I’ve been blogging for 14 years, I’ve dabbled in photography (panoramas, macro stuff, time lapse), audio engineering and recording (including putting out 3 albums), video (shooting and editing, including the RED ONE), building communities (underground music, web and technology), I’ve made a lot of weird things, and a few projects, helped start Web414, helped bring BarCamp to Wisconsin, I’ve got an Egg-Bot, and there’s probably more stuff I forgot about.

So here’s the idea: You get a full day of Pete. 8 hours worth. It would be limited to 20 people, and each attendee would pay $80. This works out to just $10 per hour to attend, during which I will teach you pretty much everything you’d want to know that I know. I’d probably also teach you how I make pizza, and that would be our lunch. I’d answer questions, I’d share what I know, I’d do demos, and I’d teach you how to do things. Sounds simple enough, right?

So does this sound crazy, or does it sound like something you’d sign up for? Leave a comment, and let me know…

Beach Bike

I shot this bike at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware using my Nikon, and then after I synced the photos to my iPad I used Trey Ratcliff’s 100 Cameras in 1 to do a little processing.

I was quite pleased with how fast the iPad processed the photos in comparison to my 3G iPhone (but that’s to be expected I guess.) The images came out at 600 pixels wide/high. I’m not sure if there’s a way to adjust that, as higher resolution would certainly be nice. I should also mention that I have the iPhone version of 100 Cameras in 1. (There’s also a separate iPad version, though I didn’t feel like plunking down more money for it… yet. Of course, this may be why the images came out at 600 pixels wide/high.)

At first I was sort of overwhelmed with 100 Cameras in 1, because, hey, that’s a lot of cameras! But I’m slowly getting used to it. It’s quite a difference from Plastic Bullet, one of my favorite iPhone photo apps, but it’s growing on it.

Squeegee Making

So two years ago I managed to acquire this long piece of rubber that would be perfect to make screen printing squeegees out of, but, you know, I’ve been busy making buttons and drawing on eggs, so I never got around to making the squeegees.

OK, the real reason I didn’t make the squeegees is because I couldn’t figure out a way to do it and actually have them look good and function well. That’s where Milwaukee Makerspace comes in…

I first started by asking some questions about cutting grooves into wood. That led to learning about dado blades (which are quite expensive!) and eventually about routers, and router tables, and how to use them (properly!) to cut grooves.

So last night I cut my first groove, slid the piece of rubber into it, and I’m this much closer to my first squeegee.

I still need to drill some holes and get some t-bolts in place, but I’m on my way to having a collection of different sized squeegees.

When I worked at a screen printing shop, we had about 30 of them in various sizes. We’d pick one that matched the size of the artwork. It’s also handy to have a bunch of squeegees around, since there’s a 4-color screen printing machine at the Makerspace, and you’re gonna need one for each color.

(Oh, I also posted about this over at the newly launched Milwaukee Makerspace web site. I may post there from time to time as raster.)

Also worth noting, I celebrated this small victory by riding Mr. Overbeck’s scooter around the parking lot at high speeds, and then listening to the craziest noisebox I’ve ever heard courtesy of Mr. Bastyr.
