The state of our world…
gnuplot
I’ve started to use gnuplot, which is a “command-line driven graphing utility.” It’s not open source but it is freely available (under some other license) and it’s been around since 1986. I don’t think it’s going to “go commercial” any time soon…
It’s proving challenging to understand gnuplot and get it to do what I want it to do, but I’ve tried using OpenOffice and Numbers and neither one can seem to plot 24,000+ data points. I considered updating my Perl code to write SVG files (and I may revisit that) but gnuplot seems to be the tool to use in this case…
Hopefully by the time I’ve collected a few more weeks worth of data I’ve got a better idea how to use gnuplot… but if you’ve got any pointers, I’d love to hear them.
Another Sugru Repair
After my first repair job with sugru, I remembered that I had this letter opener that was in need of repair. My wife had given it to me after she got sick of seeing me open letters with our kitchen knives. It’s a great looking letter opener, and the tape I had on it was not doing it justice.
I still had a package of black sugru, so I cut it open and fashioned a ring around the cracked part of the handle. I tried to get it smooth, as this repair was a lot more cosmetic than the last one. (And no, I didn’t have any white sugru!)
Note that it’s really hard to get sugru smooth. This is better than my previous attempt, but I can still see my finger prints in the sugru. Maybe I need to wear some rubber gloves.
My main complaints about sugru? I wish it were easier to get, and that it lasted longer. I’ve still got a bunch of packets and now I’m starting to feel pressured to use them before they expire. It would be great if the local hardware store carried sugru so I could just go pick up a packet when I need one… of course they’d still have to deal with the expiration problem, which is something most things in the hardware store (besides the candy!) probably don’t have an issue with. I still think it’s doable, as sugru is pretty darn cheap, so even if it cost double what it does online, it’d be a good deal.
Besides the availability and expiration issue, sugru is pretty darn cool. :)
First Plot
Song: Medium Rare Fidelity
Here’s the thirteenth (and final!) song from the album “Frenetic Stereoear” titled “Medium Rare Fidelity.”
This is just a simple mellow song with bass and guitar. It’s totally boring, but I wanted to try something without drums, which also means I played all the instruments on the track.
The background sound in this song is me taking the steps down to the basement, which is not where I recorded this, but the steps are old and wooden, and look like they could collapse at any moment. As for the name, this is definitely not “high fidelity,” though I do like the movie, but it’s a bit more “Medium Fidelity” or “Medium Rare Fidelity” as it were… (Yes, I like word play.)
On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being awesome) I’ll give this song a 6… only because it’s different from all the other songs.
