mail me daily

There’s a guy named Adam Mathes who makes things, and one of the things he made is called mail me daily which is drop-dead simple…. you enter a web site URL and your email, and you magically get email updates from the site. Obviously the site has to have an RSS feed, and you have to have an email address, but besides that, it’s pretty simple. For people who still use email, or get confused by RSS readers, or some other third thing, this is nice… For people who love email.

You can subscribe to RasterWeb! and get excerpts of these posts in your email, which will remind you to stop by the site for a full read. Now, make no mistake, I’m not trying to sell you anything, this isn’t some hard sell to subscribe to my newsletter! but if you’re interested in what I post here, this may be useful. mail me daily has no ads, and cost no money (right now anyway) so I’m interested to see if anyone finds it useful.

TO DO

Snack Bar

Things on my TO DO list I still haven’t done, but want to… Some of these were on my list for BarCampMilwaukee5‘s Late Night Hacking, but I ended up laughing way too much.

Don’t worry, I’ll get these things done… eventually… maybe…

Color + Lines

(consider it cc:by)

This is a strange one… I’m not even sure why I love this one… I just like the combination of the color and the lines. This is another that came from just experimenting with brushes in Photoshop and some creative layering. This is actually just a small part of a larger drawing that I really didn’t care for… except for this part of it. I need to try doing a new drawing that just uses this look…

Eat Cake (Internship)

Emma’s birthday was last month, and each year we try to give her an “experience” for her birthday, so this year, I got her an “internship” at Eat Cake in Milwaukee.

My Burgerthday Cake! Emma’s been interested in baking for quite some time, and for my birthday back in June she made me an awesome hamburger cake. She also loves The Ace of Cakes, so I figured since I knew Milwaukee’s best cake decorator, I’d pull a few strings and get her a one-day internship.

I’ve know Debbie Pagel (the owner of Eat Cake) since grade school, and she was more than happy to have Emma come in and spend a day with her seeing how it’s done. Debbie prepared two cakes ahead of time so they could just focus on the decorating. Emma learned about the tools, the techniques, and got to see one of the biggest mixers ever made!

Emma's Ribbon Cake

Emma's Zombie Cake

Here’s the cakes she decorated… the top one is nice and decorative and has some beautiful looking ribbons, and the bottom one is a zombie busting out of the ground.

I’d like to say a big THANKS to Debbie for doing this, and while you’re at it, stop by Facebook and ‘Like’ Eat Cake Milwaukee. (Debbie also did this awesome Oxford English Dictionary cake for me a few years back.)

Skeleton

Skeleton

I used to draw skulls and skeletons a lot… and not just in my drawing classes at UWM. If you rode a skateboard in the 1980s you may have also drawn some skulls and skeletons. I find it much easier than drawing a person with all the fleshy bits still attached.

I still want to get more comfortable with the quick sketch style on the Wacom… and of course, I’m still playing with brush styles. I should probably talk to Kevin Stohlmeyer about that.
